Time to Clear Things Up: 5 Skincare Myths That Need To Be Wiped Away!

Common skincare myths debunkedIn our quest for healthy, radiant skin, we’ve all seen our share of skincare tips and tricks in videos and articles. But which ones are truth and which ones are myth? Below, we debunk five common misconceptions about skincare so you can make sure your skin stays healthy and glowing!

Myth 1: You don’t need anti-aging products in your 20s.

Early signs of aging usually don’t become visible for most people until around our mid-30s. But skin aging actually begins around age 25, when collagen production and skin elasticity start to decrease. This makes your 20s the perfect time to start adding anti-aging skincare products to your daily routine for prevention, and have your anti-aging skincare regimen going fully in your 30s. A good place to begin is with a hydrating daily eye cream like our EYE QUENCH, plus a skin-quenching moisturizer like our REPLENISHING MOANA MOISTURIZER to help draw in moisture and enhance skin’s elasticity. You can also look to your diet for anti-aging support, with dishes rich in omega-3 fatty acids or collagen boosting foods such as chicken, leafy greens, and citrus fruits to keep your skin, hair, and nails healthy.

Myth 2: Harsh scrubs are the best way to cleanse your skin.

To get rid of all the dead skin cells that could clog our pores and cause breakouts, more scrubbing is better, right? Nope! Using abrasive skin cleansers can create micro-tears in the skin, making it more prone to damage, as well as causing dryness, flaking, redness, and sensitivity. They can also cause collagen and elastin to break down and worsen conditions like acne and rosacea. Adding a gentle exfoliating cleanser, such as our FRUIT ENYZME EXFOLIATING CLEANSER, two or three times a week (less in winter!) will clean your skin and help remove the dead skin without causing damage.

Myth 3: Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizer.

Oily skin is not the same as moisturized skin. While it’s true that oil-based moisturizers can clog pores and make acne worse, that doesn’t mean your skin doesn’t need hydration! It seems counter-intuitive, but adding moisturizing to your routine can actually help improve signs of acne. This is because skipping a moisturizer can lead to skin dehydration, which is one the things that prompts the skin to produce more oil to compensate. Opt for a oil-free moisturizer like REPARATIF OIL-FREE LOTION to hydrate without clogging pores.

Myth 4: Face exercises will reduce wrinkles.

We all know exercise is important to your body’s overall health, but should you worry about exercising your face muscles? Sadly, facial exercises do not effectively tighten skin or reduce wrinkles. In fact, repetitive facial movements can deepen existing lines. Skin elasticity depends on collagen and elastin, which decrease with age. Choosing skincare products with retinal to boost collagen products and hyaluronic acid to improve skin elasticity will do much more to help protect against wrinkles than trying to make your face work out!

Myth 5: Makeup makes your skin age faster.

Makeup itself doesn’t necessarily cause premature aging, but how you use and remove it will impact your skin’s health. Using low-quality products, not removing products properly and using heavy or drying formulas can all contribute to skin aging. If you prioritize good skincare products, clean makeup off nightly, and follow a healthy skin care regimen, makeup won’t damage your skin, or make you age faster.
